About the library

The Central Library at NIT Calicut is a leading technical library in South India, reflecting its storied heritage since the institution's founding in 1961. Spanning an expansive 11,340 square meters, the library houses an impressive collection of over 1,35,000+ technical and scientific volumes. It serves as an essential hub for the academic and research activities at the university, supporting a diverse community of more than 8,000+ users that includes undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, faculty members, and staff from various departments. The library is open from 8 AM to 12 Midnight.

The library's services are fully automated, ensuring that its extensive collection is accessible both on and off campus via Remote Access Service. It is outfitted with contemporary facilities and resources, and can accommodate 500 users simultaneously.

The philosophy guiding the library is to facilitate the free dissemination of knowledge, adopting a need-based approach to service rather than the typical rules-based system prevalent in many academic settings. This user-centric approach is supported by the library’s comprehensive automation, which includes the use of KOHA library management software for campus-wide accessibility, RFID technology for efficient front-desk operations, and seamless online and catalog access for all its members.
